Families

Open to All

You are an important part of student success. Research reveals that family support makes a significant impact on a student’s completion of their college plan. It is vital that students have people in their lives who support their college goals.

Are you that person? Are you someone’s go-to for encouragement and support?

This page is designed to help families support the college student in their life. We have curated helpful information for parents, guardians, grandparents, spouses, and even friends of current and future Motlow students.

College can be Hard. Helping is Easy.

In some ways, college is more challenging than ever. There is just so much information to process and learn. In other ways, college is more supportive than ever. Motlow supports both the college family and the student.

5 Ways Families Can Help

The student in your life is embracing new responsibilities and needs your support. They need you to be a stable force in their ever-changing world and a champion for their educational journey. Be excited for their progress. Celebrate small milestones. Dream about graduation with them!

Your student will need advice, but may not ask for it. Stay available and engaged so that asking for help is easier.

  1. Stay informed about what is going on at Motlow.
  2. Be knowledgeable about college resources.

  3. Ask open-ended questions. Listen a lot. Say little.

  4. Stay informed of changes in requirements, deadlines, and key academic dates.

  5. Remember that not all students have supportive families. Be a friend to every college student in your circle of influence.

5 Reasons for family support

  1. There are a lot of decisions to make in college. Your student needs you to help weigh all the options. Ask questions and stay involved.

  2. There is a lot of paperwork, homework, due dates, group meetings, classes, tests, and new tools. Staying organized is critical. Volunteer to be the family secretary.

  3. In college there is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting. Every student needs a second set of eyes to catch typos or prevent the dreaded run-on sentence. Offer to proof your student’s work and expect them to finish a final draft in time for you to proof.

  4. Research shows that sharing information verbally helps students retain and recall new knowledge. So listen to that complex literary analogy or math formula, even if you don’t understand it. Your student will learn it by speaking it.

  5. College is a multi-year journey. Not every paper or test will go your student’s way. There will be times when they grow weary and want to let an assignment, or even a semester, slide. They may even think about quitting. Your influence may be the difference between success and failure. So always be a source of encouragement.
