International Students

Motlow Welcomes International Students

You are an international student if you are a permanent resident or citizen of a country other than the United States who wants to study in America.

  1. Application for Admission: use the F-1 International Student application type, even if you are a transfer student.
    • Click the yellow APPLY in the top right-hand corner of the www.motlow.edu homepage, then click the green APPLY ONLINE under Step 1. Next, click First-time User Creation link. You’ll create a user ID and PIN for your application, sign-in, choose the term for which you’re planning to enroll, and select “F-1 Student” application type.
  2. Academic Credentials: You will want to request your High School and any previous College/ University transcripts, if applicable, go to a NACES member of your choosing for evaluation. Please have them list Motlow State (admissions@mscc.edu) as the recipient of those evaluations. Several of our students use www.spantran.com/motlowstate or https://myiee.org/university/motlow-state-community-college since they offer both translation and evaluation services. 
    ***Transcripts sent to Admissions directly from the student are considered unofficial and will not satisfy admissions requirements.***
  3. English Language Proficiency Scores: Applicants whose native language is not English and who are not permanent residents of the United States will be required to take one of the approved English Proficiency Exams. Official Scores will need to be sent to the Office of Admissions and Records. F-1 students must be English proficient and degree-seeking in order to attend Motlow State Community College under a F-1 student VISA. Below, are the benchmark scores of acceptable for English proficiency:
    • TOEFL iBT: 72
    • IELTS: 5.5 
    • Michigan Test: 72
    • Duolingo: 100
    • Cambridge: B2 First 
  4. Financial Responsibility: Applicants must submit the Financial Statement Form. The form must be completed by the applicant and/or their sponsor and signed or notarized by the applicant's and/or sponsor's bank. If supported by a sponsor, a sponsor letter must accompany the Financial Statement.  The first year fees and expenses total $34,760. This figure is an estimate set by our governing body, TBR, and is subject to change. The Financial Statement should indicate that the student and/or sponsor has at least this amount available. The Financial Statement must be dated within 6 months of the first semester of attendance. Additional funds are required if the applicant plans to bring a spouse or dependent into the country.
  5. International/ Immigration Documents: Submit copies of valid Passport, I-94, and VISA to the PDSO at msanders@mscc.edu. Foreign addresses are needed to complete sections of the I-20.

  6. Class Placement: Students can automatically be placed in Learning Support/ Developmental/ Remedial Courses, or they can sit for/submit ACT or SAT scores to test out and be placed directly into collegiate level. Students already in the U.S. are able to take the ACCUPLACER (at Motlow) for class placement as well.

  7. Health Insurance: Applicants must purchase health insurance through the State University and Community College System of Tennessee prior to enrollment.

  8. Immunization: Tuberculosis - Applicants must submit a tuberculosis immunization certificate from a licensed physician or other qualified medical authority. Additionally, applicants must also submit the Immunization Health History Form located in their MyMotlow account.  Although applicants are not required to complete the shot series, they must acknowledge that they have been informed of the dangers of Hepatitis B, MMR, and Varicella. For those applicants who have reached the age of 18, this form can be completed online at the time of registration. Applicants under the age of 18 must submit the form to the Office of Admissions with a parent or legal guardian's signature prior to registering for classes.

The student must have a complete file (Items 1-5 on the checklist above) with the Office of Admissions and Records before the I-20 can be issued. Items 6-8 on the checklist can be accomplished once the student arrives in the US. Students not already in the U.S. under a F-1 VISA cannot enter the U.S. until 30 days prior to the start of classes.

Additional Fee: SEVIS/ SEVP also has a I-901 fee of $350 when a student is entered in SEVP and registered with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as an F-1 student.

  • Fall term enrollment: July 1
  • Spring term enrollment: November 1
  • (Transfer F-1 Students Only) Summer term enrollment: April 1
