No job is more important than educating our nation’s youth. Teaching in a middle school or a high school offers an opportunity to make a real contribution to society. As a teacher you convey the knowledge and skills that the next generation must have to become effective citizens.

The Secondary Education Associate of Science in Teaching (A.S.T.) at Motlow State Community College is a Tennessee Transfer Pathway (TTP). TTPs enable you to complete your degree at Motlow and then seamlessly transfer to any Tennessee public, and many private, universities to complete your bachelor’s degree.

Secondary education students focus in their interested subject area and minor in education. At Motlow, you can obtain an A.S.T. degree in Secondary Education focused on mathematics, English, or social studies. In Motlow’s Secondary Education A.S.T., you will experience live classroom observation.

The skills you need and develop as a teacher are important for virtually all other jobs. You have to interact with many people, plan and organize large amounts of information, communicate both in writing and orally, effectively manage time, and make dozens of important decisions daily. Once you become a licensed teacher and gain experience in the classroom, other opportunities are open to you. There are also opportunities to become computer coordinators, school counselors, and school administrators at individual schools and at district central offices. 

Students should check with the university to which they intend to transfer in case there are additional requirements needed for admittance.
