Opportunities for Adult Learners

September 27, 2024

Motlow State’s Smyrna Campus will offer several events this semester to help foster engagement and build community among adult students. They will have the opportunity to learn more about how they can advance their education while also maintaining their responsibilities and connecting with potential employers.

Adult learners are those who are 23 and above. Motlow has over 1,100 of these non-traditional students, many of whom are using the Tennessee Reconnect Scholarship to obtain a two-year degree for free. Eric Murry, Adult Initiatives Program Manager for the Smyrna campus, hopes that these adult-centric events will help adult learners to connect with their peers and form a supportive community in order to better balance their obligations and become more successful in achieving their goals.

On October 17 from 9 am to 1 pm, current Motlow students and anyone wanting to become a better job candidate can attend the Career Readiness event in Smyrna’s Hiatt-Spivey building. Attendees are encouraged to bring their resumes so they can receive free advice on how to improve their job search. The event will also cover interview skills, how to dress for success, how to start a job search, and how to tailor a resume to fit the job. There will also be mock interviews to help participants feel more comfortable with the process.

The skills covered at the Career Readiness Event can then be used at the October 24 Career Fair in Hiatt-Spivey’s multi-purpose room. From 10 am to 1 pm, representatives from fields such as healthcare, technology, warehousing, and social services will be on Motlow-Smyrna’s campus looking for potential employees. Anyone looking for a career change is encouraged to attend to connect with employers and learn more about the jobs available in the area.

Murry will complete the semester by hosting an Adult Café event on November 19 that will be geared toward helping students finish the semester well. Attendees can learn how to best prepare for their final exams and receive free assistance registering for the Spring 2025 semester. Participants will meet in the MaryLou Apple building.

To learn more about these events or to learn about becoming an adult learner at Motlow, please contact Eric Murry at emurry@mscc.edu. Murry encourages adult learners to use these events to get involved with the Motlow community and take advantage of the many resources available to them, such as the tutoring center or student clubs. He believes that connecting with professors and classmates is a great way to promote personal success, and he hopes students will check their emails and campus monitors daily to learn about all the events available for them. He hopes students of all ages will feel like they belong at Motlow and enjoy the experience of learning.
