Motlow State is the Affordable, Inclusive Education Provider

April 13, 2022

Motlow CampusesApril is Community College Month. Public community colleges like Motlow State are a uniquely American educational model designed to guarantee access to affordable, high-quality higher education for all people.

Attending Motlow for two years is a great way to earn a college education and avoid unnecessary student loan debt. Among others, the primary benefits of community college include lower tuition and fees, and greater flexibility.

“Two-year institutions offered the best net economic gains after 10 years, in part because students who graduate in two years compared with four spend more time in the workforce and incur less debt,” said Martin Van Der Werf, director of editorial and education policy at Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.

The cost of tuition at Motlow State is significantly lower than four-year institutions. Many Motlow students qualify for Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect scholarships that can make earning a degree at Motlow free. Tuition inflation is something else to consider. At some universities and private colleges, tuition rates increase each year at about twice the general inflation rate. In contrast, Motlow’s last tuition increase was a mere 1.8 percent in the 2021-22 academic year. In the two years prior, there was no fee increase.

Motlow State even has numerous articulation agreements in place with multiple four-year institutions so that Motlow graduates can seamlessly transfer and pursue advanced degrees.

Motlow continues to produce graduates with matched intensity of speed and volume. According to the Community College Review, “Communities benefit because community colleges produce 80 percent of first responders and 50 percent of new nurses and other health-care workers.” Students with associate degrees or those who have completed certificate programs at Motlow usually go on to work in high-demand career fields much faster than they would if they had attended a four-year institution.

In addition to being a great value, and a source of scholarships and free degrees, Motlow is also close to home. Motlow’s four campuses serve an 11-county region encompassing 4,425 square miles with a population of 630,516. From 2018 through 2021, Motlow State was recognized as the top performing institution among colleges and universities in the College System of Tennessee.
