Janice Morey: A Place to Truly Belong
March 14, 2022
I loved playing sports throughout high school. I loved what being on a team, trying to accomplish a common goal with a group of people means. Motlow State Community College awarded me both basketball and softball scholarships. I was excited about the opportunity to continue to play.
I graduated from Motlow in 1996 after taking 22 hours the Spring semester of my sophomore year to graduate on time. My ultimate dream was to be able to have an impact on youth through teaching and coaching. Motlow is only credentialed for Kindergarten through Fifth grade. I knew I wanted to be in the high school setting, so Motlow's general education degree fit my needs.
Motlow helped me mature and grow into a focused student. I figured out how to have conversations with my professors that aided my growth and goals. While at Motlow, I remember struggling in Biology. I can't say that the result was what I desired, but I learned from that experience that struggling is a pathway to triumph.
After Motlow, I attended Cumberland University. I joined the softball program and earned a bachelor's degree in Education with a minor in coaching. I decided to stay there as a graduate assistant to the softball program. I also continued my education there, earning a master's in Education.
While juggling two sports and academics, I learned another valuable lesson during my time at Motlow, one of prioritization and time management. I figured out that something had to give. At only 19 years old, I made the hard choice to play only softball my second year. It was difficult for me to give up basketball, something I enjoyed, so that I could be successful in other areas of my life.
I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Motlow and the Head Softball Coach.
I would recommend Motlow to others, and I have many times. I wholeheartedly believe that Motlow can have a positive influence on all students who come through the doors. It is a safe place with tons of upsides, including affordability.
Motlow is truly a community, a place to belong, and has always felt like a family to me. You can always find someone who truly cares about your success and wants to help you accomplish your goals. Go Bucks!
