I. PURPOSE
Students, faculty, and staff should use their discretion when inclement weather conditions prohibit safe travel. Because conditions may vary in the college’s 11-county service area, students will not be penalized for being unable to attend classes provided they communicate their barrier to their instructor on the day of the inclement weather and that they make up any work missed within the time allotted by their instructor. Additionally, students who do not have appropriate remote access will be given adequate time to complete assignments. College officials encourage students to consult the Motlow College website, local media, and official college social media as timely sources for news of delays, closing of campuses, or shifts to virtual (remote) operations.
II. CAMPUS CLOSING PROCESS
The Executive Vice President for Business and Finance will monitor the weather conditions. If conditions appear to warrant the recommendation for closing all Motlow State Community College campuses, then the Executive Vice President for Business and Finance will call the President who will make the decision whether to close. If the President makes the decision to close, then the Executive Vice President for Business and Finance will notify the Vice President for External Affairs. The Vice President for External Affairs is responsible for ensuring notification via the appropriate media, the college’s website, and the Motlow Alert system to faculty, staff, and students. If closing is necessary, a virtual (remote) format will be implemented and students are to check D2L for classwork. Faculty, and staff will work on a remote basis if closing is necessary. An exception is noted for dual enrollment students and faculty in III.C.
III. NOTIFICATIONS
- Information concerning day and evening classes will be provided to the appropriate mediums. Information regarding Motlow State’s open/close status will also be listed on the Motlow State Community College web page, www.mscc.edu.
- In the event conditions warrant closing Motlow campuses, the announcement will indicate that Motlow campuses are closed which means that a virtual (remote) format will be implemented for the day and evening classes.
- Dual students and faculty coming to a Motlow State location will follow Motlow virtual/class status. Dual enrollment students and faculty attending classes at their high schools will follow their high school open/close status.
